Dyslexia Education

An idea for help with Reading.

There is a great deal of controversy as to whether or not an eye/reading training exercise can help a person with dyslexia. I believe that the one point that has been over looked with the controversy is that there are many different types/levels of dyslexia. Thus, a training exercise that may help a person with one form of dyslexia may be totally useless with someone that has another form/level. Which means in a large group study, unless one selects specific types/levels of dyslexic subjects, many training exercises WILL fail.

To help with my type of dyslexia {see: what I see }The mind must be trained to focus in on a section of text. One of the simplest and least expensive ways to start that training is to cut a small hole, slightly larger than the average word in a sheet of paper. Placing a dot at the bottom center of the hole. as shown:

-------------------------------------------------------------

| |-------------| |
| | singular | |
| |-------------| |
                                *

-------------------------------------------------------------

The idea being to "remove" all the other text except for one word, to teach the mind to focus and read just on the word above the dot.

Once this becomes fairly easy for the person, SLOWLY start widening the hole until it looks something like: (still using the dot as a pointer to the word to be read.)

-------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------
seen a race of mortals so singular in their shapes, habits,
-------------------------------------------------------------
                            *

-------------------------------------------------------------

Once the entire line is opened. Remove the dot and start trying to read the entire line without any pointers.

When this becomes easier, reduce the size of the hole horizontally to include about half the line and increase the vertical to include two lines. At this step ... the dot or a pointer may need to be replaced until the mind gets use to having the extra vertical text in view.

The idea being to keep SLOWLY increasing the reading area that is within the field of view.

This does not 'cure' dyslexia, but it does seem to help, some people. The person may never get away from using a pointer to read, especially, when stressed (when the dyslexia symptoms seem to be worse).
