But That is not what I wanted

When I was much younger, I heard a story about a Man in his house with a flood coming down the river at him.

All the neighbors were busy gathering their belongings, packing what they could and heading out. As each was about to leave they stopped by to asked the man if he needed any help packing before they left. To which he responded to each, 'I appreciate the offer. But there is no need, I know The Lord will save me'.

Just before the floods were about to hit a person drove up with a nearly empty truck and offer to take him and as much as they could carry in the truck out before the flood hit. To which he responded, 'I appreciate the offer. But there is no need, I know The Lord will save me'. The other person knowing there was not much time before the water would block the roads was not about to argue with the man and headed on his way.

As the water rose the man moved to the second floor of his house. About this time a person in a boat came by and said to the man 'Get in my boat I will take you and a few of your things to the shore.' But the man again responded, 'I appreciate the offer. But there is no need, I know The Lord will save me'. The person in the boat tried to reason with the man but as the river rose and the currents got stronger his boat was pushed away from the house further and further down stream.

The water continued to rise and the man moved up to the roof. As the water started to come up the roof a helicopter flew over, the crew dropped a ladder to the man and said climb up and we will take you to shore. But the man again responded, 'I appreciate the offer. But there is no need, I know The Lord will save me'. The helicopter being low on fuel could not wait for him to change his mind so they headed off to shore to refuel.

A short time later the man's house was completely under water and the man found himself standing in front of The Lord. The man looked up at The Lord and said 'Lord I have such a strong faith in you, why did you not save me?'

To which The Lord responded with a frustrated voice, 'I sent you, a truck, a boat and a helicopter, what more did you want?'

I wonder how often we say 'Lord Please help us.' But then we reject the help because we are being given simply what we need . . . not necessarily what we want?
